Course Content

Learn to manage businesses across international borders. With a global lens, you will refine essential business skills, study how to manage international projects, and make decisions based upon data analyses, while considering important issues of sustainability. You will study how cultural complexities like political geography and multicultural management impact business practices. Learn how approaches to leadership, change management and ethics affect today’s global environment.

Core Unit Structure

An understanding of marketing and consumer behaviour is important to be able to manage and lead marketing environments in private and public sector environments to ensure the sustainability of the business and the environment. This unit introduces sustainable marketing practices that involve creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and managing relationships in ways that benefit the organisation and its stakeholders. In considering these topics, we will consider contemporary dynamics and issues in marketing approaches.

This unit provides a solid foundation in the core business disciplines of accounting and law. The students will be able to understand fundamental accounting concepts and conventions as a basis for making business decisions. At the same time, this unit provides students with sufficient knowledge of the law to enable them to recognise a legal problem, its impact on administration and control issues, and when to obtain advice.

This unit delivers a solid foundation in the core business disciplines of operations management, logistics and management information systems. Managing logistics and technology has been identified by business researchers as one of the six core competencies expected of MBA graduates. Students will learn about controlling machines and processes, interacting with computers, and inspecting equipment.

Being a leader requires educated judgement and decision-making skills. How do leaders collect the most pertinent and important information to make decisions that impact human and financial capital? On what basis are decisions made? This unit is concerned with being able to obtain and interpret information to facilitate judgement of things, services, and people. Students receive a sound foundation in the most relevant areas of business statistics and quantitative methods, including appropriate treatment of current trends such as the business value of big data. This subject engages students in the collection of data, how to filter data and how to convert it to information to use it most effectively in decision-making.

The most crucial resource within any organisation is its people. Managing people is a central activity in most managerial-level jobs, and is vital to the financial bottom line. Line managers now need to develop and apply people management skills. Due consideration will be given to contemporary changes in human resource dynamics, such as increased flexibility and the ability to leverage technology to facilitate work-life balance. This subject focuses on the development of knowledge and skills to enable students to identify, critically analyse and make effective decisions to resolve people-related issues in organisations, facilitate employee development, and develop and sustain effective teams in complex operating environments.

Understanding human behaviour at individual, group and organisational levels is essential for private and public organisational success. This unit enables students to gain an appreciation of organisational behaviour which they can use throughout their careers. Organisational behaviour draws upon a diverse range of disciplines. These include psychology, sociology, anthropology and economics. The unit leverages these disciplines to take an integrated approach to management with an applied focus, whilst drawing upon scientific foundations and consideration of the modern contemporary workplace.

This unit focuses on thinking creatively, being able to develop objectives and strategies, and providing advice to others. Students apply the principles of strategic management to understand and apply different strategy formulation processes in use by a variety of organisations. This includes the ability to apply a range of strategic management tools and techniques to critically analyse and gather the information required to develop an organisation’s strategy.

Research is the process of finding solutions to a problem after a thorough study and analysis of situational factors. Managers in organisations constantly engage themselves in studying and analysing issues and hence are involved in some form of research activity as they make decisions at the workplace. The difference between good decisions and making mistakes is determined by how managers go about the decision-making process. This unit provides a solid foundation to enable students to utilise good research to inform decisions. Reflective of the contemporary nature of business research practice, students gain experience in working in online research teams.

Information Systems specialisation

This unit provides the necessary foundation for Business - IT alignment, an understanding of which is essential for the successful implementation of business transformation. Students will evaluate the strategic and operational roles of information systems in organisations. Students will also critically analyse the purpose, components, and challenges related to common business information systems. In addition, the students will build a knowledge and understanding of the foundations of IT and business, and how they align and complement each other. This is essential in studying the more advanced units that follow in the course.

This unit covers essential IT project management (PM) techniques for managing medium to large-scale IT projects such as enterprise software solutions projects, IT infrastructure implementation projects, and IT outsourcing projects. The unit covers process groups such as initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, control and closure. On completion of the unit, students will be able to synthesise complex project parameters and apply IT PM framework, processes and knowledge to manage IT projects. Students will employ appropriate tools and techniques necessary for project estimation, work breakdown structures, precedence analysis, scheduling, critical-path analysis, earned value management and cost-benefit analysis.

The unit elaborates various agile aspects in phases such as requirements engineering, management, design, modelling development, testing and continuous delivery. The unit discusses ‘Agile’ engineering practices to foster collaboration, feedback, and continuous improvement for producing business value. Students will apply the agile principles and practice of requirements, analysis, and design while implementing software solutions. Further, students will critically analyse customer requirements and implement solutions using agile-based software engineering practices and a body of knowledge.

The unit provides comprehensive coverage related to analysing and modelling business processes. Frameworks are introduced for understanding the design, control and improvement of business processes. Implementation details are discussed using modelling tools and analytical frameworks. Case studies are used to reinforce the general principles for managing business processes, to illustrate topics such as the identification of information-bearing events and to understand how to assess and improve process efficiency. The unit also discusses interactions between human behaviour and process design.

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions

Your go-to resource for instant answers to common queries, making your journey smoother and more informed.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study – MBA.

The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and overseas.

Yes, the MBA course is currently accredited by TEQSA.

You may see on the National Register that the Course is pending renewal. This is because TEQSA accredits higher education courses for a certain period of time, and almost all higher education providers must renew the course accreditation when the current accreditation expires. The renewal of accreditation with TEQSA is typically a lengthy process, during which time, the National Register will show that the course is pending renewal and the current course accreditation continues until TEQSA makes a decision. The same process applies to almost all other providers.

VIT has submitted to TEQSA an accreditation application for the MBA course.

Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.

A full course load of 16 units is expected to take 2 years of full time study. However, you may be eligible for recognised prior learning (RPL) based on your education and work experience.

Yes, if you have at least 5 years professional, managerial or supervisory experience. You are first enrolled in our graduate certificate in business administration (GCBA, the first four units of our MBA) and on successful completion, you may progress to finish the rest of the MBA curriculum.

The business world is becoming increasingly complex. We believe our students need to be armed with a wider range of knowledge than others so they are more employable and can better face the challenges of tomorrow. Harvard University started the world’s first MBA in 1908 where students still undertake a 2 year degree. Why would we deviate from best practice? Most 12 unit MBA courses do not have specialisation electives. At VIT though, we offer students the opportunity to specialise in one of four areas, including management, information systems, finance & accounting, and tourism & hospitality. This ensures far more in-depth knowledge of these areas.

All Australian accredited degrees are approved by the Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency.  So, the VIT MBA is academically equivalent to any other institution in Australia and around the world.

This is not the standard practice at VIT, as the core units are not granted as part of the RPL. However, only in very special circumstances the RPL Committee may grant credits for core units if strong evidence of RPL was presented.

Not all units are offered at any time. You may choose elective units from those scheduled in the timetable in a particular study period.

Domestic students do not have financial aid, however, they may be eligible for FEE-HELP from the Australian government. Some may be eligible for our scholarships in special circumstances. To know more, please contact our team on [email protected].

If you have a recognised bachelor’s degree in business (AQF7 equivalent) or related discipline, or a recognised bachelor’s degree or above in any discipline and at least 2 years professional, managerial or supervisory experience, you may be eligible to receive credit for recognised prior learning. However, your academic qualifications must be 10 years old or less to be recognised. The VIT RPL committee will assess RPL applications on a case-by-case basis.

We understand it is a big decision to pursue an MBA and you may not be sure if you have the time or feel suited for it. That’s understandable and natural, and we’re here to help.

Each intake period we have a limited number of 5 places available for students to enrol in one unit. These places are only open to either females or Australian indigenous people.

This gives you the opportunity to sit in on the Sustainable Marketing class, for free, no obligations. Just soak up knowledge and learn.

If you decide though after 5 weeks that you would like to participate in assessments, you can pay a $250 assessments fee. You may be granted a 3 week extension to complete your assessments at the discretion of the course co-ordinator.

If later you decide to pursue an MBA with us and want to receive credit for the unit taken, a $750 credit fee will be payable

You are considered a domestic student if you:

– are an Australian citizen; or

– are an Australian permanent resident visa holder; or

– are a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder, have been ordinarily resident in Australia for 10 years and entered Australia before the age of 18 over 10 years ago.
