As Chair of the Academic Board, I am pleased to welcome you as you consider, or commence, your studies at the Victorian Institute of Technology.

The Academic Board has a particular responsibility within the Institute. Our role is to provide independent oversight of academic quality and standards, to scrutinise courses and their delivery, and to ensure that all awards offered by VIT meet the requirements of Australia’s higher education regulatory framework and are worthy of the confidence placed in them by students, employers, and the wider community.

Choosing to undertake higher education is a significant step. It is not simply about acquiring a qualification, but about engaging in a disciplined process of learning, inquiry, and personal development. At its best, higher education challenges assumptions, sharpens judgement, and equips students with the skills and habits of mind needed to adapt, contribute, and lead in a changing world.

The Academic Board’s task is to ensure that the courses you undertake are well designed, appropriately taught, fairly assessed, and continuously reviewed. This assurance underpins the value of your qualification and its recognition in Australia and internationally. It is also central to maintaining trust between the Institute and its students.

As you begin this journey, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities that study presents — to question, to engage, and to reflect. Education is not a passive experience. Its value grows in proportion to the effort and curiosity you bring to it.
