This unit covers the foundation knowledge in the use of information and information technology (IT) in business. You will be introduced to the fundamental components of IT such as computing hardware, software, and networking and applications to implement business transformation successfully. It will provide the strategic and operational aspects of business, laying the foundations for business information systems (BIS).
This unit will guide you through developing efficient BIS and employing the right strategies to achieve organisational goals. It explores the benefits of information systems (IS) in successfully managing a business and how IS improve profitability and resource efficiency, as well as discussing conceptual architecture and its impact on processes, people and organisations.
You will understand the impact of IS on today's business environment and learn to evaluate the strategic and operational roles of IS in organisations. You will have opportunities to critically analyse the purpose, components and challenges related to BIS by exploring published research work. This unit will discuss the fundamental principles of IT and business, and how they align and complement each other.
This unit covers core concepts of object-oriented (OO) programming including programming paradigms, abstraction, encapsulation, specialisation, aggregation, polymorphism, exception handling, and data structures. In addition to programming skills, you will also acquire basic knowledge in designing, testing, and debugging a simple software system. The unit emphasises professional style of coding including fail-safe, efficient programs that adhere to industry and organisational standards such as unambiguous naming conventions, exception management and audit logging. The unit discusses the syntactic, structural, and behavioural typing of OO systems.
You will gain basic competence to reflect upon various programming models, independently assess the strengths and weaknesses of OO programming, and apply these in various software development contexts. You will be able to compare concepts and evaluate OO design paradigms. You will also be able to implement these concepts in a suitable OO language including Java or Python.
This unit covers in-depth knowledge and concepts for database models, systems and languages. You will explore and practise data modelling, data structure design and Structured Query Language (SQL) used in relational database. The unit also covers the functions of the database management systems (DBMS) and related administrative activities. Systematic methodology for relational database design using entity relationship diagrams and normalisation of data is covered in detail. You will be introduced to a subset of SQL using a selected database platform.
You will learn to synthesise enterprise data requirements and craft entity relationship diagrams. You will also model the physical data structure and normalise the relationship based on the application’s functional dependency needs. In addition, you will gain competence to perform complex data retrieval and carry out advanced data manipulation using SQL. Further, you will be able to implement the concepts of data security and privacy in a database.
This unit covers fundamental knowledge in data communications and network technology. It introduces various networking and communication media and provides an in-depth understanding of multiple techniques for reliable and efficient data communication. The unit covers the major transmission systems and networks together with the equipment, models and tools used to interconnect them. The unit also explores the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP), protocol standards, local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WAN), internet, intranet, networking applications and several internet technologies. You will also gain the knowledge and skills to recommend appropriate network management and network security solutions for a given application or a given organisation’s requirements.
This unit covers fundamental IT project management techniques for managing medium- to large-scale IT projects such as enterprise software solutions projects, IT infrastructure implementation projects, and IT outsourcing projects. In this unit, you will examine the fundamental principles, strategies and approaches used by project managers. The unit will introduce you to the stages of project management from project inception through to final closure. Topics covered include scope management, time management, stakeholder management, quality management, costing, integration, resource management, communication, procurement processes and risk management. In addition to traditional project management process such as Waterfall, this unit will also touch on other methodologies including Agile by Scrum and Kanban.
In this unit, you will be able to identify and synthesise project parameters and plan and apply IT project management framework, processes, and knowledge to manage IT projects. You will also learn how to independently evaluate and employ appropriate tools and techniques necessary for project estimation, work breakdown structures, precedence analysis, scheduling, critical-path analysis, earned value management and cost-benefit analysis.
This unit covers the concepts and methodologies required to design and develop software applications. It discusses the key aspects of the software development life cycle including requirement, design and testing. It explores the concepts of software control management and software project management. This unit delves into the process of both object-oriented analysis and design using Unified Modelling Language (UML) as the notation language.
In this unit you will use good software engineering practices to design code including unit testing. You will also apply, monitor and evaluate various software engineering methodologies to situations described in various case studies. You will have opportunities to examine and evaluate recent software methodologies proposed by industry and academic experts in the field.
This unit examines the key domains, concepts and technologies of data science with an aim to equip you with knowledge, skills and capabilities to acquire and process large datasets and draw insights from them. It encompasses the essential statistical concepts, theories and techniques for descriptive analysis, inferential analysis, regression, hypothesis testing and significance evaluation that are most often applied in the real world. This unit also involves using tools, methods and techniques that are needed in the processes of data acquisition, data wrangling, data mining and data modelling together with necessary coding using a popular programming language. After completing this unit, you will be able to apply statistical, analytical and technical skills to solve real-world problems and satisfy professional queries. In addition, you will also be able to provide appropriate interpretations, insights and recommendations for stakeholders at high levels. You will also experience managing a data science project and collaborating with other students.
This unit covers the key concepts involved in identifying and investigating major IT security technologies, issues, and approaches relevant to contemporary organisations and communities. You will also learn about cryptography, network security, software security and IT security management. Using case studies, the unit examines and evaluates how to apply the most appropriate security solution to maintain confidentiality, integrity and availability.
This unit provides you with an understanding of vulnerabilities, and of how to identify and mitigate threats. You will have opportunities to chart out the authentication, access control and auditing needs of an organisation in order to establish plans for risk management. You will learn about selected security technologies as well as how to identify and implement security measures. You will evaluate, compare and contrast various security models with the aim to develop strategies and implement changes in the dynamically mutating area of security threats.

The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology and Systems (GDITS) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study. VIT's Graduate Diploma of Information Technology and Systems (GDITS) is a post-graduate course at Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 8. The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and oveseas.
Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.
You may be eligible for RPL credit if you have completed a Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7 equivalent) or above in Information Technology or related disciplines.
Financial aid may be available depending on your circumstances and where you are resident.
Domestic students may be eligible for FEE-HELP from the Government.

The courses on TEQSA’s National Register that are accredited with the same name indicate different versions of the same course. The course that is accredited to 2025 is the original version of the course which is now being taught out for those students who enrolled in the course prior to 2024 and have chosen to stay in that version of the course – there are no new enrolments into this version of the course from 2024 onward.
The course accredited to 2030 is the new version of the course for all new enrolments from 2024 and for those students from the previous offering who have chosen to transition to this version of the course.
