Course Structure with Specialisation

Marketing Specialisation

A significant role of the marketer is to manage and oversee the marketing communications of an organisation. With the proliferation of media this task has become more involved and today digital media adds a further dimension to the tasks of the marketer. This unit will develop a general understanding of the elements and processes of building a multifaceted media campaign based on integrating a range of marketing communication tools. The ability to integrate advertising, public relations, promotions and direct methods are evaluated and discussed. These elements are considered in relation to theories of communication and buyer behaviour to develop practical appeals and communication plans. Students will develop a deeper understanding of each of the promotional mix elements and their particular strengths and areas of application. Students consider approaches to integrate the elements into a consistent promotional plan that, when the elements are combined, are more effective than the sum of their parts.

This unit presents a practical understanding of the design and management of data collection and analysis to assist marketers in their decisions around customer behaviour, product design and product development. The unit will deepen students understanding of the research process and survey design, and introduce students to digital tools that can assist in data collection and analysis. Today with a greater abundance of data for analysis, marketing practitioners need to be able to understand the concepts involved in accessing, analysing and managing large data sets. The unit will explain the steps in approaching and evaluating datasets, consider opportunities for harvesting data and approaches in undertaking segmentation and modelling as well as introduce a range of important tools for the marketing practitioner, including EDA, NLP and basic Machine Learning. Students will be introduced to a framework for the marketing analysis process and learn tools to identify and design appropriate frameworks, processes and metrics to measure success. Students will investigate real-world examples based on case studies and industry-based datasets. The unit covers foundational content that is applied in more advanced data analysis and model building. Students will gain confidence in assessing marketing research reports and the visualisation and presentation of data.

An understanding of consumer behaviour is a central consideration for the development of effective and successful marketing decisions and strategies. Marketing activity requires an understanding of consumers, their needs and behaviours which are introduced through the coverage of theory and the literature. The unit develops students’ knowledge and understanding of the purchasing process through an examination of internal psychological processes and external environmental factors. Students learn about consumer needs and values, how perception influences our understanding of communications and ways to measure and change attitudes. The importance of culture and group influences are also considered in the purchase decision process. By the end of this unit, students will have a greater understanding of how consumption affects our lives and of those around us. The study of consumers’ behaviour will be undertaken for a wide range of settings and contexts which can guide the development of marketing strategy.

Today marketers are required to have the know-how, experience and insights to be able to operate and guide decisions on the use of technology for marketing and communication practices, as well as buying and selling. The heightened speed of technological change and a move to a more mobile based lifestyle has resulted in major changes to the development of marketing and sales plans. The explosion of new media formats and digital content has impacted how customer value is both created and co-created. This unit introduces digital marketing fundamentals and explores a range of digital tools that support marketing strategy and tactics including: social media use, viral marketing, community forums, display and search ads, inbound marketing, search engine optimization, live chat systems and mobile/wireless technologies. Additionally, the unit will explore eCommerce topics such as online shopping, digital storefronts, customer support and online security. Students will also be introduced to web analytics used to monitor and measure the effectiveness of a company’s digital and eCommerce strategy.

This unit introduces students to concepts and practices of service-logic in marketing as well as the role of social marketing in shaping society.

The role of the customers within the service system and effective management of customer relationships. Approaches and tools for analysing, improving, and developing complex services for face-to-face and online delivery will be explained and applied, along with concepts of service quality, service recovery and the determinants of customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Service industries are a dominant force in modern economies, including in Australia. In Australia 80% of production is undertaken in the services sector and includes employment of the labour force. Services account for 66% of Australia’s GDP while over 45% of an average family's budget are accounted for by services. Services (both commercial and not-for-profit) possess several unique characteristics that require a distinctive approach to marketing strategy - both in its development and execution.

At the same time, never before have social issues been more at the centre of public and private debate. From concerns about sustainability and the future of the planet to the introduction of smoking bans, there is a growing recognition that social marketing has a role to play in achieving a wide range of social goals. This unit examines the nature of social marketing and how the adoption of marketing concepts, frameworks and techniques developed for commercial marketers can be applied to the solution of social and environmental problems. After studying this unit, you should be able to: describe and explain the meaning and nature of social marketing; analyse social marketing problems and suggest ways of solving these issues; recognise the range of stakeholders involved in social marketing programmes and their role as target markets; and assess the role of branding, social advertising and other communications in achieving behavioural change.

This unit provides students the opportunity to consolidate and further advance their understanding of marketing theories, business models, concepts, and tools by taking them through each of the stages involved in strategic marketing decision making and planning. Marketing is viewed from a whole-of-business perspective where actions have implications for the whole business and there are multiple interactions within the business that contribute to the marketing function. Students are introduced to the principles of strategy and decision-making that act on market opportunities and will develops sustainable business growth. This unit provides an overview experience, which gives students the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what they have learnt throughout their Marketing specialisation and Bachelors.
