You will gain basic competence to reflect upon various programming models, independently assess the strengths and weaknesses of OO programming, and apply these in various software development contexts. This unit covers in-depth knowledge and concepts for database models, systems and languages. You will explore and practise data modelling, data structure design and Structured Query Language (SQL) used in relational database. The unit also covers the functions of the database management systems (DBMS) and related administrative activities. Systematic methodology for relational database design using entity relationship diagrams and normalisation of data is covered in detail. You will be introduced to a subset of SQL using a selected database platform.

The issues for analysis are wide-ranging but strategic and value-laden to suit the needs of a wide range of stakeholders. In this unit you will gain knowledge, skills and capabilities to complete a data science project requiring analysis, developments, applications, evaluations and other processes to solve real-life problems in industries.
You will experience a problem-focused and project-based learning journey towards creating an analytical dashboard with comprehensive and well-balanced solutions. You will be exposed to automation of data feed and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to replenish dashboards in real time. The project will be initiated by you based on your access to an industry’s data but should also be backed up by your extensive research of the related issues, approaches, methodologies, and findings in the field of interest. In case you do not have access to an organisation’s data, you will be provided with a sample dataset by the lecturer.

This unit provides you with a detailed and in-depth understanding of big data solutions on a distributed computing platform (cloud hosted or otherwise). The Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study – MITS. VIT's Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) in a post-graduate course at Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 9. The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and overseas.
Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.
You need a minimum of an undergraduate degree to enrol in the MITS degree. It can be in any discipline and does not have to be in information technology.
You may be eligible for RPL credit if you have completed a Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7 equivalent) or above in Information Technology or related disciplines.
Financial aid may be available depending on your circumstances and where you are resident.
Domestic students may be eligible for Fee-HELP from the Government and could be eligible for a VIT Scholarship

The courses on TEQSA’s National Register that are accredited with the same name indicate different versions of the same course. The course that is accredited to 2025 is the original version of the course which is now being taught out for those students who enrolled in the course prior to 2024 and have chosen to stay in that version of the course – there are no new enrolments into this version of the course from 2024 onward.
The course accredited to 2030 is the new version of the course for all new enrolments from 2024 and for those students from the previous offering who have chosen to transition to this version of the course.
