Qualification Rule

To graduate with MITS, you need to have completed 16 units (96 credit points). If you have studied related undergraduate, you may be eligible to receive advanced standing through recognition of prior learning / credit transfer (RPL / CT) for 4 of the 16 units. To graduate you must have satisfied the requirements of all 8 core units and 6 elective and advance electives units as well as the mandatory Capstone Project worth 12 credit points.

It covers object oriented development fundamentals such as programming paradigms, abstraction, encapsulation, specialisation, aggregation, polymorphism, exception handling and I/O stream management. The unit lays emphasis on professional style of coding including fail safe, efficient programs that adhere to industry and organisational standards such as unambiguous naming conventions, exception management and audit logging. The unit discusses the syntactic, structural and behavioural typing of OO systems. The unit discusses creation of user defined data structures and type systems using generic templates.

This unit introduces necessary concepts for a good understanding of database models, systems, and languages, through to advanced knowledge within the discipline. The unit includes database concepts, hierarchical data representations and the realization of those concepts using the relational data model and its operators. This unit discusses data modelling, data structure design and Structured Query Language (SQL) used in relational databases. The unit also presents the functions of the Database Management System (DBMS) and of the related administrative activities. Systematic methodology for relational database design using entity relationship diagrams and normalization of data are covered in detail. Students will be introduced to a subset of SQL using a selected database platform.

*Note: Students who enter without a prior IT related Bachelor Degree (equivalent standard to an Australian Bachelor degree) and exit early are eligible to exit with a Graduate Certificate of Information Technology and Systems (GCITS – four subjects). This exit is not available to students who enroll with a prior IT qualification equivalent to an Australian Bachelor Degree (AQF 7).

  • Complete English language bridging course through a recognised English language centre
  • Satisfactorily completion of at least one semester of study in Australia in a tertiary course (satisfactorily for this purpose would mean that the applicant has completed 50% or more of the semester load)
  • Completion of schooling from the following countries where English is the official language: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States of America
  • In exceptional cases, the Executive Dean or delegate, can consider an English entry requirement waiver, other than the above criteria, on a case-by-case basis as deemed fit.

  • Any recognised degree is required to enter VIT’s MITS course. A recognised degree is any Australian or equivalent oversees degree at AQF level 7 or above.
Non-Graduate Entry: Graduate Certificate
  • If a candidate does not hold any previous bachelor’s degree (AQF 7) or a recognised equivalent qualification from any other country, the candidate can be admitted to Graduate Certificate of Information Technology and Systems (GCITS) with at least seven years of relevant experience, and if they successfully pass the foundation units they may exit with a GCITS and/or may continue with MITS course.

The Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study – MITS.

The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and overseas.

Yes, the Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) course is currently accredited by TEQSA.

You may see on the National Register that the Course is pending renewal. This is because TEQSA accredits higher education courses for a certain period of time, and almost all higher education providers must renew the course accreditation when the current accreditation expires. The renewal of accreditation with TEQSA is typically a lengthy process, during which time, the National Register will show that the course is pending renewal and the current course accreditation continues until TEQSA makes a decision. The same process applies to almost all other providers.

 

VIT has submitted to TEQSA an accreditation application for the MITS course.

“International students are expected to undertake a full-time study load as a condition of their student visa.”

Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.

There is a lot of choice out there in providers of a MIT degree. Many of these degrees, however, can be narrowly focused and more coding oriented, locking you into hyperspecialised knowledge. This may limit some of your employment options/paths.

A MITS degree on the other hand, as the name suggests, takes a systems wide approach. We believe this may expand your potential employment paths and ensure your knowledge stays more future-relevant in a fast and ever-changing world.

In addition, there are very few providers that offer you the flexibility of an online degree in the information technology space, whereas we do. So you can study with us no matter where you are in Australia, at your own pace.

You need a minimum of an undergraduate degree to enrol in the MITS degree. It can be in any discipline and does not have to be in information technology.

You may be eligible for 4 units RPL credit if you have a Bachelor of Information Systems or related degree.

Financial aid is available depending on your circumstances and where you are resident. Please contact our team at [email protected] to know more.

Domestic students do not have financial aid, but they may be eligible for FEE-HELP from the government and could be eligible for our scholarships.

In addition, New Zealand citizens may be eligible for FEE-HELP.

In order to be deemed eligible to access FEE-HELP a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder must:

  1. have first entered Australia at least 10 years ago as a dependent child aged under 18 years of age; and
  2. have been ordinarily resident in Australia for the previous 10 years (that is, you have been physically present in Australia for at least eight out of the past 10 years) and 18 months out of the last two years at the time of application for the loan; and
  3. meet all other eligibility for FEE-HELP.

You are considered a domestic student if you:

– are an Australian citizen; or

– are an Australian permanent resident visa holder; or

– are a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder, have been ordinarily resident in Australia for 10 years and entered Australia before the age of 18 over 10 years ago.
